Many times we have PCB files in some old format,
and we want to load them into the latest version of our software
(perhaps to make some trivial change).

• Try starting the software and doing File | Open. Perhaps you're lucky and it's a file format it already recognizes.

• So when you open the files with a text editor, what do you see at the top? If you're lucky, the first line or so will tell you what format it is in (often the name of the program and the version number).

Some people recommend upgrading files in 2 or more steps.
For example, for files created in
AdvPcb? 2.8,
Protel Easytrax (a limited version of Autotrax, also called Tango Series I ),
and Protel Autotrax,
they recommend loading the files in Protel 99 SE, save in its native format, and then load those files into Altium Designer 2004.
